    PUBLIC LECTURE

ART & NATIONAL HEALING: DESIGNING THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF SOUTH AFRICA AFTER APARTHEID

    BY JUSTICE ALBIE SACHS

THE RIARA UNIVERSITY LAW REVIEW ACTION WEEK

    THURSDAY, 13 DECEMBER 2012

The Riara University will hold its next “Law Review Action Week” Public Lecture next Thursday 13 December 2012 from 3.00 p.m to 5.30 p.m.

The Special Guest and Speaker will be Justice Albie Sachs.

Justice Albie Sachs was appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa by President Nelson

Mandela in 1994 for a fifteen year term that ended in 2009.

Justice Sachs holds Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a PhD from the University of Sussex, UK. He is the recipient of 16 honorary doctorate degrees from universities around the world.

Justice Sachs is a respected freedom fighter and human rights advocate. In 1988, he lost an arm and the sight of one eye when South African security agents placed a bomb in his car. Working closely with Oliver Tambo, he helped draft ANC’s Code of Conduct and its statutes. As a member of the Constitutional Committee and the National Executive of the ANC, he played an active role in the negotiations that led to South Africa becoming a constitutional democracy.

In addition to his work on the Court, Justice Sachs has travelled to many countries sharing South African experience in healing divided societies. He has taught at Harvard Law School and University of Chicago Law School, among others. He is currently serving on the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board in Kenya.

Justice Sachs has also been engaged in the sphere of art and architecture, and played an active role in the development of the Constitutional Court building and its art collection on the site of the Old Fort Prison in Johannesburg.

    All are welcome

This is a very good topic for Kenya since we are heading for election and considering our past experience, we really need this. Cant wait to be there.
