Prof. Robert Gateru is the Vice Chancellor of Riara University. He joined Riara University from Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) where he was the Principal of the Nairobi Campus. He has also worked as founding Dean and Associate Professor in KeMU’s Faculty of Computing and Informatics. Prof. Gateru previously worked at Kabarak University where he was the Founding Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology and also served as Head of Department for Computing, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as a Senior Lecturer.
Prof. Gateru has served on numerous Boards, including the Rural Electrification Authority (now Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation); Linking Industry With Academia (LIWA) Kenya Trust; Education for All Children (EFAC); among others. Additionally, Prof. Gateru is a member of the Executive Committee of the Kenya Association of Private Universities and is also a member of the Education Sector Board at the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).
Prof. Gateru is the holder of a PhD in Microelectronic Engineering & Semiconductor Device Physics from the University of Surrey (UK), Masters in the same from the University of Cambridge (UK) and a BSc. (First Class Honours) in Physics & Mathematics from the University of Nairobi.
He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Founding Member of the Physics Society of Kenya, and a Fellow of the Institute for Climate Change & Adaptation at the University of Nairobi. He also serves as an Expert Assessor for the European Commission in Brussels.
Selected awards that Prof. Gateru has received include the Distinguished Scholar Award by the ICT Association of Kenya, the Africa HR Leadership Award for Outstanding Contribution to Training & Development, and Kenya’s Top 40 Under 40 Men (2012) recognition by the Business Daily newspaper.
