As a way of giving its graduates an edge in employment, Riara University School of Foundation Studies offers core and elective course units that ensure that all Riara University graduates are firmly grounded in a rich and eclectic base that imparts core skills and aptitudes such as critical thinking and sound reasoning, effective communication and social awareness, among others. All students undertaking undergraduate programmes are required to take core courses from the School of Foundation Studies in their first and second year before they can take electives in the third and fourth year. In addition, the School offers certificate and diploma courses.

Riara University School of Foundation Studies in collaboration with other Schools in the University offers diploma courses in specialized areas, with course durations of between one and two years. These diplomas are widely recognized, and are eligible for credit transfer to a relevant degree programme.
