Dean of Students

PRINCIPAL ROLE:

Under the direction of the Deputy Vice Chancellor- Academic Affairs, this position will be responsible for maintaining a supportive environment and culture that synthesizes the development of our students in a holistic way. The overall purpose is to plan and direct University activities related to student service and campus life.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

•  Should be able to deliver lectures, in any of the Schools in Riara University, monitor student progress and provide support and advice to enable the students excel in their studies.

• Provides leadership in and is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and regulations pertaining to students and student life

• Develops and coordinates policies and procedures relative to all student activities

• Oversees annual revision and production of Student Handbook and other documents

• Reviews reports of student misconduct cases that require disciplinary action to ensure recommendations conform to University laid down procedures, practices and policies

• Provides leadership for the development of co-curricular programs and services designed to advance student affairs, student activities, students’ rights, responsibilities and conduct, and disability services.

• Advises the Senate and Management on matters relating to policy, program, and administration of student affairs

• Develops extracurricular social and recreational programming ensuring integration with the academic life of the institution and encouraging student personal growth and development.

• Oversees Student Union constitution, advises student union activities and clubs policies, honour code, sponsors and, directs appropriations of student services union

• Liaises with the different Schools as regards student work study office in collaboration with the financial aid office in cases where it exists

• Manages the student affairs budget, reviews it, makes internal reallocations and requests for funding, and constructs the annual budget for student affairs and Dean’s office

• Participates as the Returning Officer in Student Union elections, thereby supervises the student union constitution in consultation with senior administrators

• Assists in coordinating non academic admissions related issues: foreign student services, health services, security arrangements for on and off campus students, financial aid, off campus student housing, and student transport

• Provide advocacy and support by serving as the primary point of contact for students with complaints or issues, academic advising, and providing referrals to resources as appropriate

• Coordinates communication updates and general information flow between student fraternity and the administration

• Assists in the coordination of community services and linkages with external stakeholders including alumni association

QUALIFICATIONS

a) PhD in Business Administration/Counseling/ Psychology/Communications or equivalent.

Job Purpose

To make significant contributions to the development, monitoring, review, management and implementation of the University’s quality assurance policies and procedures

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To formulate policies, strategies, systems, procedures, guidelines and codes of practice for the university’s academic and administrative quality assurance and improvement;

2. To develop policies and guidelines on teaching pedagogy, evaluation, program review and student learning assessment;
3. To promote the culture of academic quality within the university through assisting the University Quality Assurance Committee in developing and fostering a quality culture.

4. To ensure effectiveness of academic advising and course registration through feedback from students, follow up on teaching performance and effectiveness, smooth administration of examinations, advise the management on how the system is performing in regards to quality, and suggesting improvement strategies;

5. To assess training needs in the academic and administrative divisions of the university and spearhead planning and execution of training in the identified need areas.

6. To liaise with HR Office to promote the profile of quality assurance in the university through, rewarding sterling performance, penalties for poor performance, continuous training of academic and non-academic staff, among others;

7. To analyze evaluation data, generate appropriate quality assurance and management reports as well as recommend and pursue interventions for identified challenge areas.

8. To advise on and ensure that all programmes, short course and trainings of the University are developed and approved in compliance with the Commission for Universities Education (CUE) Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Universities in Kenya and RU specific standards;

9. To develop and review quality assurance standard operating procedures for Quality Assurance Office in compliance with the University Quality Assurance Policy;

10. To receive and analyze reports submitted by various committees for strategic university decision-making;

11. To coordinate the preparation of annual or such other reports for external bodies, e.g. the Commission for University Education, Council of Legal Education, among others.

12. To monitor national and international developments in Quality Assurance and advise the Senate, Management Board and the University Council;

13. To advise the Vice Chancellor on Quality Assurance issues in the University;

14. To prepare an annual quality assurance report for the University Council;

15. To provide secretarial services to the University Quality Assurance and Standards Committee;

16. Handle all quality related feedback from stakeholders and ensure action and response.

17. Any other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Vice- Chancellor or his appointee.

Minimum Requirements:

The Applicant must;

• Be a holder of at least a Masters Degree or its equivalent from a University recognized by the Commission for University Education.

• Possession of PhD is an added advantage.

• Have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in higher education management.

Deputy University Librarian

Job Title: Deputy University Librarian

POSITION FUNCTION

Reporting to the University Librarian, The Deputy University Librarian shall be responsible for management of overall Library operations and development of Library policies and systems affecting library services. The person shall coordinate evaluation and selection of information resources required for the various programs, provide information literacy skills and encourage lifelong learning.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Working with the University Librarian; the person is responsible for developing library policies and systems affecting all aspects of library service; planning and implementing library programs. The person shall also be responsible for user and technical services and library security staff

2. Developing and implementing Information Literacy Programs and consult with faculty in creating opportunities for orientation and teaching information literacy skills including facilitating academic success and encouraging lifelong learning by combining new and best traditional techniques and technologies.

3. Developing work schedules for and assigning duties to library staff and be in charge of University’s Library daily operations

4. Provision of reference and research assistance in the library

5. Working with faculty, students and staff in collection development and coordinate the evaluation and selection of information required for the various programs in the university and acquisition of library resources

6. Creation and sustenance of awareness for use of library services; market and position the library as an integral part of teaching, learning and research in the University

7. Assist in recruitment, evaluation, coaching and mentoring of staff and interns in the library.
